What’s Current: Research shows severe disparity between representation of women & men in news media

Despite the growing numbers of women in journalism, progress for women in news media grinds to a halt. Extensive results of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) released November 23 show that:

“[W]orldwide, women make up about 50 per cent of the general population but only 24 per cent of the persons heard, read about or seen in newspaper, television and radio news, exactly the same level found in the 2010 report.”

Charlie Sheen spent $1.6-million using prostituted women after he was made aware of his HIV status.

Austrian teen girl who ran away to join ISIS, used as “jihadi poster girl” to inspire recruitment, beaten to death by ISIS men after attempting to escape.

Medical researchers, who had nothing better to do other than figure out how they could commodify horrific bodily modifications to fulfill a male fantasy, say surgery could give men wombs of their own within five years.

Here are the things all women do that men don’t know about:

“…It’s laughing off sexism because we felt we had no other option.

It’s feeling sick to your stomach that we had to ‘play along’ to get along.

It’s feeling shame and regret the we didn’t call that guy out, the one who seemed intimidating but in hindsight was probably harmless. Probably.

It’s taking our phone out, finger poised over the ‘Call’ button when we’re walking alone at night.

It’s positioning our keys between our fingers in case we need a weapon when walking to our car.

It’s lying and saying we have a boyfriend just so a guy would take ‘No’ for an answer…”

This woman received a wave of vitriol from men online after stating that she had zero interest in having children. She said:

“Most of it washes over you but the one that disturbed me the most was a man saying he’d like to crowdfund an operation to render me physically unable to speak. It’s always about silencing people.”
