What’s Current: Indigenous women camp outside presidential palace in Ecuador in protest of extractive industries

  • In Ecuador, Indigenous Women are protesting President Lenin Moreno’s failure to consult them on decisions made on mining and oil extraction, causing environmental damage in their region.
  • Calgary rapist Drayton Dwayne Preston posted photos and videos of his assault on a 17-year-old girl on Facebook. Preston has been given a 26-month sentence and will be on the sex offender registry for the next 20 years.
  • Republican candidate Leslie Gibson calls Emma Gonzalez, a high school student who survived the mass shooting in Florida and consequently became a gun-control advocate, a “skinhead lesbian” on Twitter.
  • For the first time, Multnomah County has accepted a candidate filing for Precinct Committeeperson who identifies as neither male nor female, but “nonbinary.’’
