What’s Current: Mexican women protest against Supreme Court decision endorsing surrogacy

  • Feminists in Mexico staged a protest against a Supreme Court endorsement of the surrogacy industry, including what is called “altruistic” surrogacy.
  • Turkish actress Ezgi Mola faces up to two years in prison for allegedly insulting a former soldier accused of rape. Musa Orhan was released from jail pending his trial, and in response Ola tweeted a condemnation of the “wicked rapist.”
  • More than 1,200 girls in Rajasthan have started a movement campaigning for the abolition of child marriage in India, which have spiked during the pandemic. As a nation, India has one of the highest rate of child marriage, accounting for a third of all instances globally.
  • A top university in China has received criticism for using sexually suggestive advertisements featuring women. One of the ads for Nanjing University featured a young woman and the caption, “Do you want to live at the library with me, morning ‘til night?”
  • New research into the killings of 50 Black women in the U.S. by police forces has found that of 100 officers involved, only 14 were either fired or charged, and none have been convicted.
