PODCAST: Sarah Slamen fights Texas' anti-abortion bill

Sarah Slamen was one of many reproductive rights advocates to testify against Texas’ proposed abortion restrictions at the Senate Health and Human Services committee hearing last week. The video of her testimony against her state’s anti-abortion bill, which shows her being forcibly removed from the Senate floor by state troopers, went viral, propelling Slamen into the media spotlight.

The bill, which was passed by the Senate on Friday, prohibits abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and only allows abortions only in surgical centers. Because only five out of 42 existing clinics in the state meet these requirements, the likely result is that these clinics will be forced to close.

In this episode, I speak with Sarah Slamen about the implications of the bill and feminists’ ongoing fight for reproductive rights in Texas.
