What’s Current: Two women kicked out of shelter after voicing concerns about sharing a room with a trans-identified male

Screen shot/Global TV

Two women have been asked to leave a women’s shelter in Kelowna, British Columbia “for good” after raising concerns over the shelter’s accommodation of a biological male who identifies as a woman.

UK women continue to bear 86 per cent of the brunt of the Conservative government’s austerity agenda. Glosswitch writes:

“It has been said, over and over, so many times it has become boring and almost meaningless, that austerity hits women hardest. Of course it does. It saves money if the work that goes into caring for bodies is taken from the state and offloaded on to women, by a Tory government that claims to hate dependency… It wants people to stand, if not on their own two feet, then on the backs of unpaid carers.”

Danny Masterson is the latest celebrity under investigation for sexually assaulting multiple women. Predictably, he defends himself by accusing the women of lying.

Danny Masterson is blaming Leah Remini?! Ridiculous.

They’re already losing their shit over Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s comments. Lol

Also related ,the shits show and the fit they’re having at FC’s fb right now on the last trans article posted is amazing.Handmaidens out in full force today.

        Hollyyy shit. That’s beyond reprehensible.

To maintain my faith in humanity, I have to believe that tweet is a joke or like trying to be ironic or something. I cannot believe any rational person could read a story about the mutilation and storage of female genitalia and comment first and foremost on the horrors of cissexism.

        • Meghan Murphy

          She was serious.

        • FierceMild

They don’t recognize any such thing as female genitalia. They think men can give birth.

    • Morag999

Someone needs to “fix” this woman, I see. Pretty blatant, dare I say honest, language. Female malfunctioning requires some tinkering so we operate properly, like fembots.

  • No One

Gross but not surprising. I was kicked out of a shelter about 9? years ago after being attacked by a trans person. He was high as a kite and attacked me while I was trapped in my wheelchair and they kicked me out, they also hid him from the cops.
Since then i’ve had 2 therapists and 1 doctor try and “correct” me for calling him a man. Absolutely disgusting.

  • Novo

I saw the following tweets by a notoriously douchey white trans activist, Morgan Page
“Who is friends with Chimamanda Adichie and wants to have a compassionate convo w/her about her views on trans women?” and ” I feel like talking to some smart and kind people would change her mind on the unfortunate things she had to say today.”

Compassion towards an evil TERF???!! Of course, the tweets are still really disgusting and condescending, but it shocked me since this particular trans activist is usually horrible to women and goes right for the vitriolic, ageist misogyny. I think they realized everyone would see right through this if a bunch of white American men in dresses started to hurl the usual ‘die in a fire TERF!!!’ stuff at an outspoken, intelligent African woman.

So instead Morgan has to ask for someone to ‘educate’ and politely mansplain to the woc how ‘ignorant’ she is and how she shouldn’t talk back to men. Hahaha nice try, but nope. It’s also funny since liberal trans activists always claim that radfems are imperialistic ‘white feminists’ with a white savior complex…I guess they need to look in the mirror.

    • Meghan Murphy

Yes, notable they won’t go with their normal tactic: bully, harass, smear. As you say, they realize they’d be called out as white males trying to silence women.

  • Rachael

The Iceland ruling made me cry, because finally someone is doing something, but also because we are in 2017 and this is only just a thing.

The trans in the women’s shelter story is terrifying. We aren’t safe anywhere.

  • Sabine

So two women are kicked out of a WOMEN’S shelter, where they are supposed to be sheltered from the threat of male violence, because they don’t want to share a room with a transvestite? If a man has all his genitalia and presents himself as a woman that is what he is. A transvestite has more rights in what is supposed to be a safe space for women than actual females. This kind of crap is going to be happening more and more. It’s the MRA movement in drag. Men can’t as easily stomp all over women’s rights these days and get away with it just because they are male (although of course they still do in many ways) – they have to be more covert about it. Stick on a dress, call yourself a woman and then erase female biology being linked to the reality of womanhood from the usual entitled, privileged, threatening male position. What really gets is me is the number of actual women buying into this dangerous, patriarchal bullshit.

I understand these women not wanting to share a room with a male. I once went on a media arts organization sponsored trip to a regional conference (on diversity) in the 1990s. I travelled 1326 kilometres by rental car to another Canadian city, in another province, with a man from another media arts organization (our organizations were too poor to send us by air), a very long trip that ended at 1 am in the designated city. At that time of the night/morning there was one room left and we were expected to share it. I was very impoverished at the time and could not afford to book a separate room (and there were no rooms in that hotel anyway at our arrival time, due to the conference). I asked if there were other ‘sharing’ (I didn’t really know anyone attending, they were from other provinces/organizations in western Canada) options, there were not. So I reluctantly went to the room, showered (door locked, I always lock doors), got into my pajamas in the bathroom, got into bed, and this guy comes round to my bed, directly opposite me so I had a clear view. He was naked, hands on hips, legs apart, ear to ear grin, saying something like, “I feel invigorated” (I don’t know it was 1 am). I just mumbled something incoherent (I didn’t have my glasses on, and my bedside table light was out, so I hoped he would take the hint) and he went back to his bed. I spent the rest of the trip avoiding spending any time in the hotel room in case he was there. I avoided him during the day at the sessions that were held. I remember other women at the conference looking at me as if I was being inordinately rude to him (because I travelled with him I guess, however I didn’t know him as a person, I guess I could recognise him in a crowd, just barely). I didn’t want to be around him or give him the idea that I wanted to have anything to do with him. I also didn’t talk to him very much, except to say yes or no. I remember envisioning slamming his self-righteous ass against the wall of the hotel room but of course, did nothing of the sort. You never know how someone (a total stranger) is going to behave. When you put vulnerable women in the situation of having to choose between sharing a room with someone with a penis and leaving, it makes sense that they would leave the shelter. Which is extremely unfair. Women’s shelters were set up in all good faith by 2nd wavers and others (who lobbied municipal politicians, wrote funding applications/grants, did all the work) for the benefit of women (biological females) in crisis. Not entitled MtTs.

If there’s any bright side to this I think that it’s that the more these incidents happen, the more this ideology and these laws will be challenged as the impact on girls and women becomes more obvious. It’s going to be much harder for transgender activists to control the narrative outside of their queer bubble. It’s just so unfair that girls and women have to deal with this in the first place.

  • I wonder how many women have been abused or threatened by males in homeless shelters. It’s not a population that’s disposed to trust police or to seek attention.

In case you haven’t heard about Christopher Hambrook aka Jessia Hambrook case, here is a synopsis.

Predator who claimed to be transgender declared dangerous offender

TORONTO – A sexual predator who falsely claimed to be transgender and preyed on women at two Toronto shelters was jailed indefinitely on Wednesday.

Justice John McMahon declared Christopher Hambrook — who claimed to be a transgender woman named Jessica — was a dangerous offender.

The judge said he imposed the indefinite prison sentence because there’s a great risk that Hambrook will commit more sex crimes and require strict supervision if he returns to the community.

“I am satisfied there is no reasonable expectation that a lesser measure would adequately protect the public from Christopher Hambrook,” said McMahon.

He noted the Montreal man, 37, attacked four vulnerable females between the ages of five and 53 in Montreal and Toronto over the past 12 years.

“He has demonstrated from the age of 12 until the present an inability to control his sexual impulses,” said McMahon.

Hambrook served four years in prison for sexually abusing a five-year-old girl and while on bail for that crime, raping a 27-year-old intellectually-challenged woman in Montreal.

After reading “Everyone Should Be a Feminist” I thought Adichie was a typical liberal feminist. I’m impressed that she’s speaking out like this.

    • Kit Kimberly

” I thought Adichie was a typical liberal feminist.”

And you know she’s from Nigeria and what she lived through?

WOW, that’s some white Western privilege there :/

Talking about FGM as a thing that happens to females is ‘cissexist,’ yes.

“I think the idea that transwomen intrude upon “women’s shelters” or bathrooms is a red-herring.”

It’s not an idea, its reality…transwomen are intruding into women’s spaces.

“At the same time, it assumes that non-trans women are not also able to commit abuse against women, and assumes, most egregiously, that transwomen are men!! No.”

Transwomen are biological men and the the majority of violence (especially sexual violence) against women are committed by biological men.

By allowing men into female only spaces (like women’s prisons, locker rooms, or shelters) we are putting already-vulnerable women at risk of being victims of male violence.

  • lk

Yes, cissexism makes no sense, but the term that really gets me is cisprivilege. How can you look at the present and historical status/material conditions of women around much of the world and claim that females are privileged?!

    • Aylune B. Papyrus

It makes me furious too. It’s the ultimate proof transwomen are men. Cisprivilege checklists were obivously designed by men who have no idea what it’s like to be a woman in this world – and who have drank the whole ”Actually, women are super privileged in this society” Kool-Aid.

  • Morag999

    “non-trans women”

    Too funny.

Is that like non-rich poor people? Or non-white black people?

    “most egregiously”

That’s also very funny. I heard it, for some reason, in Queen Elizabeth’s accent. As if calling men, men is the height bad manners. So boorish, so horrible … it’s just not done … my word … shocking! Makes me wonder who, if fact, is clutching hir/ zir pearls.

  • Morag999

‘ While I think Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was speaking all kinds of rational sense, I take issue with her saying that it is not about “whether you have a vagina or penis”..because the world treats us as second class citizen because we are female by virtue of biology. We are treated as women and girls because we are women and girls.’

Agreed. I thought the same. We are treated as second class citizens because we are female. We are attacked and silenced as females and therefore we must fight back as females, as girls and women — not as some sexless, indistinct, random people.

  • FierceMild

What’s a woman, you contemptible misogynist?

How dare you spew this vomit under an article DOCUMENTING A TRANSWOMAN’S INTRUSION ON A WOMAN’S SHELTER. He has a penis, that both makes him a man by definition and equips him to rape. He may not rape, but he also may rape. He certainly does not belong in a women’s shelter. You are fundamentally dishonest and you revolt me.

Further, we are WOMEN not non-trans women.

  • FierceMild

Yup. Absolutely indistinguishable from MRAs who wine ‘but whaaaaaat about circumcision!’ anytime FGM is brought up.

  • JingFei

You don’t actually know much about this topic, do you?

  • Cassandra

Trans Inc. hates the term “female.”

  • FierceMild

I would also like to know why you put “women’s shelters” in scare quotes?

Do you think women don’t need shelter from men or is it that you think we don’t deserve it?

  • Are trans women not men? Prove it! Are trans women as nonviolent as biological women? Prove it! It is your assertions that are absurd, so take your “no evidence” away with your male entitlement, because the burden of proof here belongs with you.

  • ” the idea that transwomen are by and large committing acts of sexual violence against non-trans women is absurd and founded in no evidence…”

Is there any evidence in any of the posts on this page?: https://web.facebook.com/groups/1722756661380462/

We do not think transwomen are worse than other men, only that the group of biological males that actually wants to enter female spaces does not belong there, any more than other biological males do.

  • Cassandra

Yes. Male violence against Trans “women” would fall under the under hate crimes umbrella, right?
It’s hate to hurt a man with lady feelz. But when males hurt actual females? Nope. Not a hate crime!

  • FierceMild

    I hate “fronthole” more myself.

  • Morag999

“There is already a ton of negative pressure on transwomen to behave and assimilate in these spaces … ”

There is so much bizarro, backward, upside-down, mind-bending bunk in this fragment, that
I’m not sure I can capture it all. But off the top of my head …

First of all, no females invited men into girls’ and women’s private, vulnerable spaces. The trans-identified men invited themselves, and demanded entrance, and demanded that any resistance to their demands be framed as hate crimes.

Pressure to “assimilate”? From whom? Not from us! Again, men invited themselves in to their own notions of womanhood. I thought “assimilation” was the whole point of transness?

But, why do they even need to make efforts to assimilate when — as the story goes — they’re ostensibly already women, and ostensibly were really girls in childhood, not boys, and were ostensibly female-ish even in the womb, with their super-special brain structures and gender essences and whatnot?

And there’s “a ton of negative pressure” on males to “behave” in women’s spaces? Goodness. Well, if they were behaving and respecting girls’ and women’s boundaries, they wouldn’t be there in the first place. Yet you call it “negative” to expect trans-identified men to behave properly once they get their way and get in. As if it’s a terrible burden for them to behave in ways that aren’t alarming to females, to the class of people who are daily subjected to sexual and psychic violence from males. WTF is that?

But girls who are anxious and afraid of male voyeurism and molestation, who have been taught their whole fucking lives that they must take responsibility, rely on their gut instincts, be assertive, etc., to avoid becoming victims of men’s prerogatives and impulses … now those same girls and women must make exceptions, suppress what they’ve learned about the world … or else they are the meanies, the violent ones, the ones subject to punishment for the hate crime of wanting to avoid males in the private spaces where females hide from danger, where they sleep, pull their pants down, undress, shower.

Your contempt for us is as clear as day. That’s why all you’ll get from many of us now is nothing but ridicule and a big FUCK YOU. Which is what all trans activists — including the well-meaning naive ones — richly deserve. Your contempt for females is contemptible. What’s to talk about anymore?

  • shy virago

    I totally agree!

  • Cassandra

    We control life, ultimately.

Also they want to fuck us. And we usually don’t want to fuck them. This makes them poop their pampers.

  • genny

Men hate us because we dare to demand to be seen as human beings. That doesn’t fit into their male supremacist agenda.

  • Meghan Murphy

You think it’s a privilege to have access to a safe space to escape male violence? A thing that, for the record, most women do NOT have access to? Cool story.

  • Meghan Murphy

It is not a ‘privilege’ to have to escape male violence, you utter tool.

  • Meghan Murphy

Why don’t you create your own spaces instead of intruding onto women’s? We fought hard for our spaces, you can surely do the same (and, I suspect, you will get a hell of a lot more support than women ever did in creating these spaces).

  • TwinMamaManly

Dudebro, all your views are seen through a prism of the white male entitlement and privilege you were born with. You’re just not getting it (no surprises there). Give me one good reason why women should have to sacrifice safe space, that is hard won and hard fought, for a biological male when these women are seeking refuge from male violence? You just expect us to “make nice” and be welcoming and invite you and your dicks or ladydicks right on in. As Meghan said, fight for your own space, don’t co-opt ours.
