What’s Current: Jian Ghomeshi is trying to rejoin the media landscape with a new podcast

Jian Ghomeshi is trying to sneak back onto the media landscape with a new podcast:

“In a 140-character environment, nuance is often a casualty. The Ideation Project is a creative adventure with the aim of taking a bigger picture view on newsworthy issues and culture, with the goal of asking questions and starting conversations.”

The internet responds with a resounding “NOPE.”

Support Julie Bindel’s reporting! She is investigating the story of suspected baby trafficker, pimp, kidnapper, and major charity fraudster John Davies.

Katie J.M. Baker reports: “UC Berkeley officials knew that at least three students had made sexual misconduct claims against renowned philosophy professor John R. Searle before he was sued for harassing a young woman in March.” The “open secret” that was his ongoing predatory behaviour is, seemingly, finally actually coming out into the open…

Thanks to a campaign initiated by Caroline Criado-Perez, suffragist Millicent Fawcett will be the first woman honoured with a statue in Parliament Square.

Zhao Liuis has been sentenced to seven months of house arrest for bringing women from China and Japan to Ottawa to prostitute in the brothels he ran out of a high-end condominium on York Street.

Disgusting. Worse that this was reported by mainstream media outlets. Better he be ignored.

I didn’t know about Byline! I have just donated towards Julie Bindel’s report. I really hope the truth gets out!!!

  • Philosophy is a wonderful discipline that requires acute logical skills. Logical argumentation, and the ability to analyze the logical links of argumentation are the beadrock of philosophy. Unfortunately men as a class seem to lack such abilities. As feminist scholars begin to tackle the logical arguments of the philosopher “heroes” of western culture, they are discovering holes you could drive a truck through. No guff. Male philosophers have had 400 to 500 years to find those holes and couldn’t manage it. Just goes to show ….. you can drag a thirsty man to a well, but you can’t make him drink. They should all be fired and replaced with women philosophers. Then both the discipline and the students would be safe.

Oh how strongly I agree with this! As a scholar of the humanities I have seen this over and over. Men are just too prejudiced by their longstanding default rational status to recognize its absurdity, which makes them unfit for the job of philosophy and renders them epistemologically handicapped.

When you couple religious thought with philosophy (a coupling that has held for nearly all of western intellectual history) you compound this problem and grow it exponentially with the result that men – white men in particular – are absolutely the worst possible candidates to understand or draft ethics. The philosophy built on such a grounds must be primarily concerned with justifying those grounds and we can clearly see that western philosophy is oriented toward the justification of male supremacy and moves from there outwards in a never ending tide of further abuses (racism, colonialism etc) and the attendant justifications for them. I am utterly convinced that this is why we no longer have new and coherent philosophical thought other than that which originates with feminist philosophers.

      • Exactly, and yet feminist philosophy is apparently considered a minor sub-division of philosophy!!! For men to exalt themselves for their “rationality”, they have to ignore how utterly, overwhelmingly, totally they are possessed by their own anger, jealousy, greed and lust (not to mention their insecurity over not having control over procreation/life). Hey buddies, those are feeeeeeelings.

        • FierceMild

So true! Especially wrathful anger, the anger of the guilty. I grew up, as so many of us do, in a toxic stew of the wrath of the guilty and the rage of the oppressed. Yuck. And we so desperately need a new ethics. We killed our god in WWI, buried him in WWII and have been in serious need of a new direction ever since. The only thing keeping us back as a culture is that the direction has been provided by feminist philosophers who are silenced in the classroom and resisted in the mind.

I just want to vomit when I read articles like the one about that slave dealer. He actually forced women into sexual slavery and the punishment deemed appropriate is that he’s grounded?!?! What the fuck!!!!!!

  • Meghan Murphy

    Ha! Wow.

Re: your question about male revulsion, I have also wondered this. Why aren’t more men defensive of Ghomeshi? They seem defensive of so many other men accused of abuse and assault… I, too, cannot figure out the difference between Ghomeshi and, say, Woody Allen, O.J., or any other run of the mill dude accused of abuse, who also got off. (Andray Domise anyone?)

  • Meghan Murphy

Ah yes, perhaps part of it. I find that kind of silly though… They seem to think feminists will be bothered if they promote this argument — that all liberal/feminist men are actually misogynists — but why would we be?? I mean, it’s often true. MRAs really need to pay closer attention to what feminists are saying…

    • melissa

Yea, exactly! Like exposing misogynists is a bad thing for feminism now?

I don’t think its even about that. Its their disdain for any man seemingly being an alley to women, hence why they’ll always call any man speaking up for women “cuck”, “mangina”, “white night” etc. To them(i’m not including Patton Oswalt in this, but the gloating clueless MRAs), any liberal man claiming to support women is by default “our side” and them turning out to be frauds means “out side” has somehow taken a hit. It is extremely silly.

I can answer his question: because men no matter who they are feel entitled to abuse women. Even twitter quarterbacks like Elfwick get off on rubbing men’s abuse in the faces of women. Seriously, this guy can go fuck himself and his racialized slurs.
