The Court of Appeal of Alberta has ruled that Bradley Barton be retried for first-degree murder in relation to the death of Cindy Gladue, who was found dead in a bathtub in an Edmonton motel room in 2011. In March 2015, a jury found Barton not guilty of murder or manslaughter. CBC reports:

“The original decision to acquit Barton was described by the appeal court as having ‘exposed the flaws in the legal infrastructure used for instructing juries on sexual offences in Canada.'”

The executive director of the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, Michele Moreau, resigned on Friday.

Manitoba’s Child and Family Services (CFS) is funneling Indigenous girls into the sex trade. APTN reports:

“’I think I turned bad when I went into CFS,’ said [Tara McKay, 21]. ‘When I started hanging out with the girls that were put in CFS I started to get into lifestyles that were above my age. You get involved with them and you become their friends and you become their lifestyles and become involved with what they do.’

APTN was told stories of kids being put in hotels at young ages where they hung out with sex workers.”
