What’s Current: Visa and Mastercard to investigate ties to Pornhub following child abuse allegations

  • Following a New York Times editorial by Nicholas Kristof, detailing Pornhub’s distribution of commercial sexual exploitation material featuring child abuse and rape, MasterCard and Visa are reviewing their business relationship with the site. The Montreal-based parent company, MindGeek, may also come under additional scrutiny from Canadian officials.
  • A Russian live streamer, Stanislav Reshetnikov, has been arrested after his pregnant girlfriend, Valentina “Valya” Grigoryeva, died of hypothermia during a broadcast, in an incident where a viewer paid him $1300 to lock her outside on the balcony in freezing temperatures.
  • On Sunday, mourners gathered to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the shooting at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique, where 14 women were gunned down by a misogynist who wanted to murder women for studying science and technology.
  • With the passage of the new Cybercrime Bill, it will soon be a criminal offense in South Africa to send nude images without the subject’s consent, including photoshopped images, which are often classed as “revenge porn.”
