What’s Current: U.S. Supreme Court denies request to stop Texas abortion ban

  • The U.S. Supreme Court allowed a “fetal heartbeat” abortion bill passed by the state of Texas to be implemented. The law bans abortions after six weeks, before most women know they are pregnant, does not allow exemptions for rape or incest, and allows private citizens to sue women they suspect of having underwent the procedure for up to $10,000.
  • The Scottish government is currently considering adopting a “Nordic model” law to combat sex trafficking by criminalizing pimps and punters rather than people in the sex industry.
  • An inquiry into the rape of Australian former liberal staffer Brittany Higgins has been delayed for a second time.
  • The number of underage girls taking explicit photos and videos has more than doubled, according to Irish watchdog group Hotline.ie.
