What’s Current: Mexico’s Supreme Court decriminalizes abortion in landmark ruling

  • Mexico’s Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling declaring that women cannot be  criminalized for having an abortion. In the first half of the year, over 400 women were being investigated by authorities.
  • A man in England who strangled a woman to death during intercourse has been sentenced to four years in prison, prompting criticism from women’s rights campaigners for the leniency of the ruling.
  • A survey of Australian girls and young women found that girls as young as seven have had negative experiences online. One in four of those aged 11-21 had received unwanted sexual images, half had been sent sexist comments, and 28 per cent had been sexually harassed.
  • Women in Myanmar protesting the military coup are being targeted by a Telegram group which shares revenge porn and deepfake porn of young female activists.
