What’s Current: Missing Afghan women’s rights campaigners released

  • Four female activists who went missing in Afghanistan after participating in anti-Taliban demonstrations are released by “de-facto” Taliban authorities. The Guardian reports up to 29 women and their families have been detained in Kabul since the Taliban seized power.
  • Girls in North Bengal are being trafficked and forced into surrogacy. Traffickers are meeting the “relentless” demand for surrogate children by selling girls to childless couples across India and forcing them to carry their babies.
  • A recent plan by China’s government-backed family planning agency says it will “intervene” when unmarried women and teenage girls seek abortions, in order to promote “traditional values” and encourage people to have more children.
