What’s Current: Iowa bans the medical transition of kids

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed two bills into law this week, one preventing doctors from administering puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to minors, and prohibiting “sex change” surgeries for those under 18, and another preventing students from entering school bathrooms or changing rooms designated for the opposite sex.
  • The Jazz Jennings story becomes evermore heartbreaking as he grows up. On the newest season of I am Jazz, we see the trans-identified boy, now 22 years old, crying, telling his mother, “I don’t feel like me, ever.” Jennings has now had four sex change surgeries, went on hormone blockers at 11, and started taking estrogen in high school.
  • Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, has revealed she is in remission having been diagnosed with throat and breast cancers in January.
  • Rep. Leigh Finke, the first male state lawmaker in Minnesota to identify as a woman, has been celebrated on USA TODAY’s “Women of the Year” list. Finke “transitioned” in 2017 and has pushed for Minnesota to remove any restrictions for minors (from outside the state as well as in) seeking hormone treatments or trans surgeries.
