What’s Current: Students lobby to no-platform feminist Julie Bindel (again)

julie bindel

Yet again, students are lobbying to no-platform lesbian feminist Julie Bindel, who is scheduled to speak at a U.K. Working Class LBGT History Month event in Greater Manchester.

Man kills his wife, daughter, and mother in Nova Scotia murder-suicide. Lionel Desmond shot all three women before killing himself in their apartment, 29 kilometres north of Guysborough.

While Star Wars fans do their damnedest to paint the Harrison Ford/Carrie Fisher affair as romantic, The Princess Diarist exposes the fling for what it really was: predatory.

U.K. Police warn owners of vacation properties against unknowingly renting them out as a pop-up brothel.

  • I just watched @Lisa Laflamme on CTV news turn a news story about the murder of a girl and two women into the story of suicide among military vets. They’re two different stories, but you’d think the loss of three lives was pretty much irrelevant. They ended the story with stats about the number of suicides among vets. That’s important, yes, but I would like to know and I think it’s pertinent wrt this story, how many vets commit murder, manslaughter and rape after leaving the military. Once again, among four people, only the man was regarded as important.

  • Mitochondrial Eve

It’s actually ALWAYS men who kill their families, mothers, wives etc before they commit suicide. I have an avid interest in true crime and women being the perpetrators of murder suicides is statistically rare. It’s an entitlement thing – I think in part they can’t stand the idea of their ‘possessions’ getting on with their lives. Nah, they need to be buried right next to their owner. Women and children are not much more important or higher up in status to these men than a shiny new sports car or giant flatscreen TV.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if his wife hadn’t announced she was leaving him, and this is simply a case of “oh no you don’t”. Will anybody investigate, I wonder? Could they not even, even, even interview some friends of the girl and of the women to speak about how there were loved, how they will be missed? Nothing!!!

      • Rachel

Exactly. It infuriates me when people say “why doesn’t she just leave?! She should leave and get a VRO. She’s part of the problem. Needs to stand up for herself.” THIS is why she wouldn’t/ couldn’t leave (most likely), or why most don’t. They know they are in the most danger when thy announce they’re leaving or are in the process of leaving. Not just because stats show this is when women are most in danger, but also because the woman knows her abuser better than anyone. In amongst all the niceties, she’s heard all the veiled threats, and seen all the displays of violence, even if rarely being the target herself. Not all men who end up killing their families are physically abusive all the time. Even if a woman runs and hides away from him – he will often threaten to kill her family, even if she’s not staying with family. It’s such a horrific situation to be in.

        • oneclickboedicea

Much easier to rip into a dead victim than blame the man for his own violence.

          • FierceMild

That would violate first principles; a woman is always to blame.

      • Lisa Tremblay

The murderer’s wife, Shanna, was living apart from him at the time of the murders because he was verbally aggressive. In social media posts, her husband admitted to freaking out at his wife and daughter, being jealous and over controlling and using vulgar language on his family. He blamed his behavior on PTSD and a head injury sustained in the military. Unfortunately no one recognized these posts as signs of domestic violence. Everyone seems to be focused on the lack of services for him as a vet rather than what services or supports Shanna might have needed to protect herself and her family from him. I don’t know for instance if the hospital (where Shanna worked) has a domestic violence policy that includes information, screening and supports for staff and patients, but, if not, they should develop one and dedicate it to her.

    • FierceMild

Less important. After all, men don’t beat their TVs or cars.

      • Just Passing Through

They do smash them up from time to time in their mantrums. But yes, agree.

    • Lisa Tremblay

I agree. The victims will probably be interred with him in a family plot. It happens all the time. Imagine being buried beside your murderer! It’s fundamentally disrespectful to victims. There should be a law against it.

      • FierceMild

I didn’t even think of that. What a horror.

  • GP

Which students are lobbying? This is at a private library. And the issue is that she’s been invited to speak under the banner of LGBT History Month. The suggestions have been to either cancel the talk, or remove the association with the history month due to her well-known attitudes about trans people (never mind bisexuals, sex workers, Islam, etc.)

Currently there is an open mic being organised at the same time to offer an alternate event as well as a protest during to demonstrate disappointment that WMCL hosting someone who spreads hate and violent rhetoric against trans people.

    • Meghan Murphy

Please tell us about her ‘well-known attitudes about trans people’ that mean she should not be allowed to speak at this event.

The young white man behind this ridiculousness is a student at Durham University. Those screaming on the event page appear to all be young white students.

    • Tired

Yawn. Middle class men have always put down working class women. So you’re all wearing a frock these days. And you think that makes you marginalised and special. LOLs, it’s nothing we all ain’t heard before.

      • Wren

        lol!

    • FierceMild

Violent rhetoric? You’re sounding a bit hysterical, dear.

  • Tired

I’m heartened to see the WMCL are standing up. I mean, it’s not like middle class men ever tried to shut down working class women before, is it?

A working class hero is something to be. Thanks Julie

  • FierceMild

This one had mental health resources at the end; as if more talk therapy would have saved those women.

  • Morag999

His dog was permitted to live without him? I’m always surprised when pets survive this type of male terrorism.

  • Meghan Murphy

    Oh which comment?

  • Meghan Murphy

Julie is my friend, you fucking moron. I don’t need to Google her. You are the one who has no credibility here.

  • Meghan Murphy

She doesn’t say awful things to and about trans people. Maybe you should listen to what she actually says instead of following feminists around the internet ordering them to Google things they are already more than educated about.

  • Meghan Murphy

Oh my god. As if mocking narcissistic moronic college students is bigotry, you tool. You people really need to get your priorities straight. She is being attacked and no platformed because you people don’t like her feminist opinions, not because she’s ‘mean.’ (i.e. funny.) No platforming women who have fought their whole lives to end ACTUAL violence against women because you don’t like feminist analysis is not defensible. I mock ridiculous people too — regardless of how they identify.
