What’s Current: LAPD files three new sexual assault cases against Harvey Weinstein

What’s Current is Feminist Current’s daily news roundup.

  • The LAPD has presented the L.A. County District Attorney with three sexual assault cases against Harvey Weinstein. Two cases were previously filed by the Beverly Hills Police Department. The District Attorney will make the final decision about pressing charges.
  • Oklahoma judge told a drug-addicted plaintiff that he might give her a lighter sentence if she could prove she had sterilized herself, and so she did.
  • US efforts to end female genital mutilation are highly contentious within the Muslim community.
  • Though young lesbians are often ignored or bullied within LGBT activism and social spaces, they are increasingly reclaiming the L word.
  • The Canadian Supreme Court is hearing an appeal of the acquittal of a man who was accused of abusing his stepdaughter and charged with sexual assault and interference. The judge who acquitted the man said: “As a matter of logic and common sense, one would expect that a victim of sexual abuse would demonstrate behaviours consistent with that abuse or at least some change of behaviour such as avoiding the perpetrator.” The Supreme Court is now considering whether a victim’s “postoffence conduct” should impact the court’s assessment of a victims credibility.
