What’s Current: In India, women in prostitution are being excluded from receiving government support

  • Women in India’s sex industry have been neglected by government support during the COVID-19 outbreak and are facing increased risks of starvation.
  • Scottish Parliament’s consultation on a gender identity bill, the Gender Representation on Public Boards Act, received numerous responses demanding the government should reassess who can legally qualify as a woman. The GRPBA defines woman as “a person who has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment,” which would apply to even those individuals without a Gender Recognition Certificate.
  • In Yemen, women activists are being abducted and tortured by rebel forces. A support group in Cairo for women released from detention has told The Associated Press of 33 documented cases of rape and eight instances of women debilitated by torture.
  • The Internet Watch Foundation has found that 90 per cent of child sexual abuse content is hosted in Europe, with 71 per cent hosted in the Netherlands.
