What’s Current: FIFA approves maternity leave for female players

  • New rules approved by FIFA on Friday say female player will be given 14 weeks maternity leave and her club will be obliged to reintegrate her afterwards.
  • Hundreds of Google staff sign a letter in support of leading AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru, who says she was sacked by Google after accusing the company of “silencing marginalized voices.”
  • Two formerly prostituted women urge the Scottish government to criminalize the purchase of sex. While Scotland recognizes prostitution as violence against women, it is not considered a criminal offense. 
  • Abigail Shrier’s book, Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, is listed as one of The Economist’s top books of 2020.
  • A Quebec action plan to fight domestic violence will not include additional funds to develop the provincial network for women fleeing abuse. Quebec’s federation of women’s shelters says the funding is inadequate, noting thousands of women are being turned away, as all shelters are at capacity.
