What’s Current: Bangladesh to ban ‘immoral character’ test in rape cases

  • Bangladesh will end a legal stipulation that allows for women who come forward with allegations of rape to be investigated for displaying an “immoral character.” Campaigners say legislation implemented in 1872 during British rule has frequently been used to undermine evidence provided by rape victims.
  • According to statistics provided by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, a woman was raped every 10 minutes last year in Brazil and there was a femicide every seven hours. The number of recorded instances of rape in the country increased 3.7 per cent in 2021
  • Women across Sudan staged demonstrations protesting against the alleged gang-rape of a young woman by security forces, who have been responsible for dispersing political organizing since the military coup in October.
