  • In Kenya, a 13-year-old girl who was recently subjected to female genital mutilation has been beaten to death for refusing to accept an offer of marriage to a 60-year-old pedophile who wanted her as his 5th wife. The clan of the six men who “disciplined” the girl to death will pay a fine of goats and cattle to her family.
  • A Saudi woman, Esra al-Ghamgam, has been sentenced to death over charges related to her protest for democratic reform and the release of the kingdom’s political prisoners. Executions in Saudi Arabia are typically carried out by beheading.
  • The US government is paying to settle numerous lawsuits related to Customs and Border Protection agents’ inappropriate strip and cavity searches of female travelers, including minors.
  • After years of work by women activists to overcome the shame and stigma meted out to rape victims, Kosovo’s assembly has recognized survivors of sexual violence by police and other combatants in the Serbian war of ethnic cleansing as civilian war victims, and the government has approved pensions for the survivors.
